How to make sheer and jelly polish look even
Six of the designs above are sheer, and sheer polish is where most home manicures go wrong. Streaks and patchiness come from technique, not from the polish.
- Use a ridge-filling base coat. Sheer polish sits in every dip in the nail plate and makes it visible.
- Three thin coats, never two thick ones. Thin coats are what let a jelly stay translucent while still evening out.
- Three strokes per coat: centre, left, right. More strokes than that will drag the previous coat and cause the streaking.
- Let each coat dry properly. Sheer polish takes longer than it looks like it should because there is more solvent in it.
- Finish with a thick glossy top coat. Depth is most of what makes a jelly look expensive.
Common questions
Is dark nail polish unprofessional?
In most workplaces, no, provided it is neat. What reads as unprofessional is chipping, uneven edges and overgrown cuticles rather than the colour itself. If your workplace has a specific policy, it will usually be about length and nail art, not shade.
Will dark polish stain my nails?
It can, particularly reds and blacks. A proper base coat prevents almost all of it. If staining does happen it is cosmetic, it grows out, and it is not damage to the nail.
Which of these lasts longest?
The sheer washes and jellies, by a distance. Because there is less pigment and the colour is close to the natural nail, growth at the cuticle and small chips are far less visible. An opaque black shows a chip immediately.
What nail shape looks most polished?
Short squoval or short almond. Both look intentional and neither catches on things. Whatever the shape, matching all ten matters more than which one you pick.
