Brown has quietly replaced black as the default dark manicure. It is warmer against skin, it does not stain the nail plate the way black does, and it reads as considered rather than severe. For fall it is the single most useful bottle you can own.

Picking the right brown
- Cool skin suits browns with gray or plum in them: taupe, espresso, cocoa.
- Warm skin suits browns with red or orange in them: cinnamon, caramel, chestnut.
- Avoid brown that sits within a shade or two of your own skin tone. That is what causes the muddy effect. Go clearly lighter or clearly darker.
- Creme over shimmer. Brown shimmer tends to read dated. A flat creme or a matte finish looks current.

How to sponge a brown ombre
- Base coat, then two coats of the lighter brown across the whole nail. Let it dry fully.
- Paint a stripe of the light brown and a stripe of the dark brown side by side onto a makeup sponge, slightly overlapping in the middle.
- Dab the sponge onto the nail, positioning the dark half at the tip. Dab, do not wipe. Wiping smears the transition into a line.
- Repeat three or four times, reloading the sponge each time and shifting position very slightly to soften the join.
- Expect it to look rough and textured at this stage. That is normal and the top coat fixes it.
- Clean the skin around the nail with a brush dipped in remover, then apply a thick glossy top coat to level the texture.

Does brown polish stain nails?
