How to do the swirl
- Two coats of the cream base. Let it dry fully. This design fails when the base is still soft.
- Paint one thick curved stripe of brown across the nail, roughly an S shape. Do not aim for neatness.
- While it is still wet, drag a clean cocktail stick through the edge of the stripe in short pulls, pulling brown out into the cream.
- Wipe the stick between every pull. Once it is loaded with brown it will smear instead of blending.
- Three or four pulls per nail, then stop. Overworking turns the swirl into mud, and this is where most attempts go wrong.
- Let it dry properly, then a thick glossy top coat to smooth the ridge where the brown sits higher than the base.

When should I switch to fall nail colors?
Follow the weather rather than the date. Warm neutrals like caramel and taupe work from late August. Deep shades like oxblood and espresso tend to look premature until the light changes, which is usually early October.
What color is best for back to school or back to work?
Mushroom taupe or caramel on short nails. Both are neutral enough for any dress code and neither needs redoing the moment it starts to grow out.
Is it too early for burgundy in September?
